Residents of Krapa-Akrofonso in the Ejisu Municipality in the Ashanti Region are living in fear of a disease outbreak following the overflow of their community refuse dumping site and public toilet.
The site without a container, which has been left uncleared for months, is now overflowing with waste, bringing thousands of flies and unbearable bad smell into nearby homes.
Speaking to GardenCityNewsGH.com , a retired nursing officer whose room is directly next to the public toilet and refuse site broke down in tears while pleading with the Municipal Assembly.
According to her, life has become unbearable as her room is full of bad smell and flies chase her every time she is eating.
“My room is full of bad smell and flies. Each time I am eating, the flies chase me. I beg the Municipal Assembly to quickly come and save us before there is any outbreak,” the retired nurse cried out.
Residents say they have made several complaints but nothing has been done. They fear the situation could trigger cholera and other communicable diseases if not addressed immediately.
They are therefore calling on the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ejisu, the Municipal Environmental Health Department and Waste management authorities to as a matter of urgency come and clear the site.
