Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has launched a scathing condemnation of the arrest of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Bawuah, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Speaking at the party’s Delegates Congress at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, 2nd October 2026, the former Vice President did not mince words.
Dr. Bawumia revealed that the Manhyia South MP had voluntarily and freely reported himself to the EOCO office upon invitation, questioning the rationale behind his subsequent arrest .
“He freely reported at the EOCO office and he is not a flight risk. So I wonder why such a person should be arrested and detained,” Dr. Bawumia told charged delegates.
Describing the action as a clear case of political persecution, the NPP flagbearer said the arrest represents a dangerous “weaponization of power” by state institutions.
His comments drew loud cheers from thousands of delegates gathered at the stadium, many of whom have described the arrest as an attempt to intimidate the Minority in Parliament.
The arrest of Hon. Bawuah has already sparked heated political debate, with the NPP Minority accusing the government of using EOCO to target opposition figures.
EOCO is yet to officially respond to Dr. Bawumia’s comments.
