Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has taken a swipe at the NDC government over its handling of the galamsey menace, describing its much-touted promises as a “pure scam”.
Speaking at the NPP National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Dr. Bawumia was candid in admitting that galamsey has been a major headache for every government in the Fourth Republic.
However, he was quick to add that the situation under the current NDC government led by President John Dramani Mahama is by far the worst.
“Galamsey has really dealt with every government in the Fourth Republic, but with the NDC government under John Mahama, it is worse,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
The former Vice President reminded delegates that the NDC, while in opposition, promised Ghanaians that they had the magic wand to stop galamsey and preserve and treat the country’s water bodies.
“Today, the situation is even worse than they met it. All our water bodies are more polluted,” he said to loud applause.
According to Dr. Bawumia, all the promises the NDC government made to Ghanaians in the lead-up to the elections have turned out to be deceptive.
“All the promises the current government promised Ghanaians is a pure scam,” he declared.
His comment has already set the tone for a renewed political debate on the fight against illegal mining, a key national issue ahead of 2028.
