The National Council of Parent Teacher Association (NCPTA) has defended the collection of Parent Teacher Association (PTA) contributions in schools, insisting the move is to support the development of schools and not to burden parents.
In an exclusive interview with Worshippa on the Okese FM Morning Show, the National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the NCPTA, Madam Felicity Ahafianyo, said the association is an NGO spearheading the welfare of students through voluntary contributions from parents.
According to her, PTA dues are used to fund critical infrastructure in schools that government alone cannot immediately provide.
“We are operating to support our wards in schools to make things easier for students by assisting schools to build infrastructures like washrooms, toilet facilities, some dormitories and other needful projects in various schools which we believe doesn’t need to be a burden for the government,” Madam Ahafianyo stated.
She emphasized that the contribution is not mandatory but voluntary, and no student should be denied admission or access to school activities for non-payment.
On the ongoing dispute with the Ghana Education Service (GES), which on September 23, 2026 directed heads of SHS/SHTS to stop collecting PTA dues and refund monies already collected, Madam Ahiafianyo said the NCPTA has petitioned the Director-General of GES.
She disclosed that the association is relying on a High Court injunction dated July 21, 2026, in Suit No. GJ/004/2026, which she says preserved the status quo and restrained GES from preventing NCPTA branches from operating.
“We have petitioned the Director-General and we are waiting for a positive result,” she said.
She further directed PTA executives across various schools to educate and encourage parents on the need to support school projects by contributing to the PTA.
The NCPTA has reiterated that all monies collected must be properly receipted and accounted.
