There is growing tension at Sobolo, a suburb of Kumasi in the Oforikrom Municipality, following a heated land dispute between aggrieved traders and the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Sadat.
The aggrieved traders, who are predominantly carpenters dealing in the sale of chop boxes, wooden doors, beds and other furniture, have accused the MCE of being behind the sale of a parcel of land they have been operating on for years.
According to the traders, a private developer stormed their enclave a few days ago with land documents, claiming he has legitimately bought the land and is now the rightful owner.
The developer, whose name is yet to be disclosed, reportedly ordered the carpenters to vacate the land immediately, sparking agitation among the traders.
Some of the aggrieved carpenters alleged that the land could not have been sold without the knowledge and approval of the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly led by Hon. Sadat.
“We have been here for many years doing our work. Now someone comes to tell us he has bought the land. Who sold the land to him? It is the MCE, Hon. Sadat. He has sold our land,” one aggrieved carpenter alleged.
The traders have therefore called on the MCE to come clear on the matter and intervene to prevent the private developer from ejecting them from the land, which serves as their only source of livelihood.
They have threatened to stage a massive protest against the Assembly if nothing is done to resolve the issue.
Garden City News GH will follow up and bring you the Assembly’s side of the story.
