Ghana’s rap legend and multiple award-winning musician, Obrafour, known widely as the Rap Sofo, has acknowledged the massive role social media is playing in today’s music industry.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with GardenCityNewsGh.com, the ‘Pae Mu Ka’ hitmaker said although he enjoyed massive success during his peak days, things would have been even bigger if platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube were as powerful as they are today.
According to Obrafour, during his era, promotion was very difficult and expensive. Artistes had to rely on radio, TV, and physical CDs and cassettes to reach fans.
“Today, a young artiste can record a song in his bedroom, put it on TikTok, and the whole world will hear it the next day. In our time, it wasn’t like that. You had to struggle a lot to promote music,” Obrafour stated.
“I must acknowledge that social media has helped music promotion a lot. The new crop of artistes are very lucky. If social media was this powerful in my time, I would have been even bigger globally”.
The Rap Sofo, who is celebrated as one of the pioneers who paved the way for Ghanaian rap, however, advised young musicians not to rely solely on social media trends but to focus on creating timeless music that will live for decades like his.
His comments have sparked conversations among music lovers about how social media has changed Ghana music from the era of cassettes to the era of TikTok.
